Youtube: Disable subtitles – TecChannel Workshop

Disable subtitles in browser

If you use Youtube in the browser, you can very quickly switch off the subtitles for the video that is currently playing. To do this, move your mouse over the playback area to reveal the controls.

    Subtitles sometimes appear automatically in YouTube videos. This can be disturbing if you understand the original language.

    To turn off captioning for a single video in the browser, click the white screen icon with a red underscore.

    Youtube then hides the subtitles directly and the red underscore is no longer displayed.

    To switch off subtitles in general for all clips, click on the gear icon.

    In the menu that opens afterwards, switch to the “Subtitles” category.

    Now scroll to the end of the displayed list.

    In the information text that you then see, follow the “Settings” link.

    You will then be taken to the Playback and Performance option. Now remove the tick in front of “Always show subtitles” on the right – done.

    If you’re using the Youtube app for Android, tap once in the video area during playback.

    After that, more options will appear. Now tap on the CC icon.

    The subtitles for the current video are now deactivated, which you can see from the fact that the CC icon no longer has a white background.

    To switch off subtitles in general, tap on your profile picture in the top right corner after starting the YouTube app.

    Next, open the Settings category.

    In the following dialog, continue with the item “Subtitles”.

    Now tap the switch next to the “Subtitle Settings” entry.

    The subtitles are then permanently deactivated, so that no further options are displayed.

Then click on the subtitle icon with the red underline next to the gear icon. You can also just press c on your keyboard for a shortcut. Youtube then hides the subtitles directly.

Disable subtitles permanently

To permanently disable subtitles for all videos, you must be logged in to your Youtube account as this is a personalized setting. Instead of clicking on the subtitles symbol, now click on the gear icon and then on the Subtitles entry in the menu.

Now scroll to the end of the displayed list and follow the Settings link. In the following dialog, the Playback and performance option is already selected in the menu on the left. In the right pane of the window, all you have to do now is uncheck Always show subtitles.

Hide subtitles in Youtube app

If you are using the Youtube app for Android, you can also hide the subtitles. For the current video, tap once in the video area during playback. After that, more options will appear. Now tap on the CC icon. The subtitles are then immediately deactivated.

To switch off subtitles in general, tap on your profile picture in the top right corner after starting the YouTube app. Next, go to Settings and then Subtitles.

In the following dialog, under the example image, tap on the switch next to the Subtitle settings entry. After that, it’s in the off position, so no other options for subtitles, such as size and style, are displayed.
