WordPress Tutorial – Install WordPress on PC/Windows

In this article we will show you how to create a WordPress blog locally on your Windows machine set up We describe two ways for the installation, whereby the installation via “Bitnami” is much easier and faster than the installation via “XAMPP” and “PHPMyAdmin”.

Why should you install WordPress on your Windows PC?

There can be various reasons to install WordPress on Windows PC. For example, if you still no hosting rent, but still want to get up close and personal with WordPress, a local installation makes sense. This way you don’t incur any unnecessary costs for WordPress hosting. A second reason could be that Testing of certain functions that you want to try out before you integrate them into your live site.

Install WordPress locally on the Windows PC with “Bitnami”.

As already mentioned, this way of installing the fastest and simplest. Bitnami provides ready-made packages of more than 130 applications for various platforms. Installation via XAMPP

The installation gets a bit more complicated if you Installation via XAMPP performs. There are a few more steps and setup processes to be overcome here. XAMPP is a completely free, easy-to-install Apache distribution that includes Apache, Maria DB, PHP, and Perl (these things are needed as “underpinnings” for WordPress).

  2. Install XAMPP, follow the installation instructions
  3. Copy the PHPMyAdmin data into your server directory
  4. Visit the local address of the PHPMyAdmin pages
  5. create in PHPMyAdmin a new databaseby clicking on “Create new database”.

  7. By clicking on “OK” you confirm the information and the database is created

  9. Download the current WordPress version: https://de.wordpress.org/download/
  10. Unzip the data and copy it into the folder of your XAMPP server. The folder is called “htdocs” and is located in the main directory of your Windows PC.
  11. Now call up the address in your browser: http://localhost/wp-admin/install.php
  12. The installation process first reports that the configuration file “wp-config.php” is missing. Click on “Create the configuration file
  13. Click on “Let’s go” and off we go
  14. Now you need the previously noted access data to the database: Enter all the requested information and click on “send”
  15. In the next step you enter a name for your blog and create the admin account
  16. Now click on “Install WordPress”
  17. If everything went well, you can access your local WordPress installation at the address: http://localhost/

Migration/copy of an existing blog

The Bitnami installation conveniently comes with a plugin for importing and exporting existing blog data. With the “All-in-One WP Migration” plugin, you can migrate your existing blog locally to your Windows PC with just a few clicks. To do this, you install the plugin on the WordPress system that you want to copy to your local installation. There you then export all data including images and database via this plugin. You can then import the “export package” into your local WordPress installation via the plugin. You create an image of your live page and can now make changes locally and test. No programming knowledge is required for this either.

As mentioned above, the installation via “Bitnami” is very easy and quick (takes about 10 minutes). The second way described is a bit more complicated. Due to the many things that need to be considered when installing via XAMPP, easy to make mistakes.
