WordPress maintenance mode: How to take your site offline

This file is automatically created and usually removed when you use a maintenance mode plug-in. WordPress will load it as well if it was created manually. You should leave the included timestamp blank, but you must not forget to delete the file again after successful maintenance.

Another way to start maintenance mode manually is via the file functions.php. The functions.php is a template file used to add functions and features to the WordPress project. In this case, add PHP code to the file that will enable maintenance mode. There are different variants of such PHP code. For example, a possible entry in functions.php looks like this:
