Include PDF files

If you include a PDF file via the file block, the PDF file will be displayed in the post. You no longer have to install separate plugins. Example:

More options on Image Block

Duotone is a new option for displaying images when using the Image Block. When editing an image you can use the following option:

More image rendering options in WordPress 5.8: DuotoneGraphic: haurand.com

It will look like that:

This is the text that overlays the image

You can also use new options with this block, such as: B. crop images or put a text over the image.

Better orientation at the blocks

If you click on the three lines next to the (i) above, the overview of the blocks no longer appears as a popup, but as a list:

Images in WebP format

I tested the plugin WebP Converter for Media

By adding images to the media library, the images are automatically (additionally) saved in WebP format in a separate directory:

Use of WebP graphic format: original sizes of the imagesoriginal sizes

Using the WebP graphic format in WordPress 5.8WebP files in the uploads-webp folder

When the browser tries to download an image file, the server checks whether the webPformat supported and whether the file exists. In the example you can see that the size of the file (duotone.jpg.webp) is much smaller (see right).

In the developer console, I could see that the WebP graphic was being used, although the original folder was specified as the folder.

In the standard loading mode, the plugin does not change image URLs, so there are no problems with caching the HTML code of the web page and its generation time does not increase. It doesn’t matter whether the image is included in the post or used as a background graphic. According to the developer, this always works.

Block widget editor

The widget area has been completely replaced with a block-based widget editor. So now all blocks can be used in the widget area. The “old” widget area is automatically transferred to the “new” widget editor. I will possibly write a separate post about this.

A first step to full site editing

The theme editor can be used to edit templates that contain your content. To do this, however, a block theme or a theme that supports this function must be activated. The GeneratePress theme activated here obviously does not (yet) support this function. There are more than 20 new blocks available in compatible themes. In principle, this should be the first step towards full site editing. I’ve only tested it to a limited extent, but I haven’t (yet) found a concrete benefit for me.

Query Loop

The query loop block or query loop allows posts to be displayed based on certain parameters. Here’s how you can use this block to show posts from a specific category. This block is the most powerful of the newly added blocks and offers many configuration options.

I will probably also explain these possibilities in a future post.

Here is a quick example of the query loop:

The Block Pattern Library is online

Since the release of WordPress 5.8 there has been a pattern library. Here you can download block patterns and use them on a WordPress site. Here is the additional link to the German-speaking area.

The theme.json

No, of course we haven’t forgotten the theme.json: developers and administrators of WordPress websites in particular have the option of activating or deactivating the available block options, for example. In addition, the available values for options can be specified. Certain standard styles such as text and background colors can also be specified via theme.json. A detailed description would go beyond the scope here. I’ve already run some tests with the GeneratePress theme enabled here as well, and it’s a great new option indeed. See the theme.json dev note for more information. The creation of the theme.json can be done via the following website.

Conclusion

In my opinion, WordPress 5.8 again includes a lot of very helpful and interesting options. The announced Full Site Editing is only partially available as part of the Template Editor. So we have to wait and see what happens in the following versions. We have now updated about 8 “real” WordPress instances and many test environments and could not find any problems (as of July 24th, 2021). Also in the German support forum there were almost no messages related to WordPress 5.8. The developers did a great job there.
