What is WordPress? – Simply explained by the professional » SEM consultant

Create an affordable and professional website with WordPress

Most consumers look online for information to make smarter purchasing decisions. According to a study commissioned by Google, more than half of all consumers research product information online before making a purchase or service decision.

If you want to be successful with your company, there is no way around a professional website. The website is the backbone of any business and supports digital marketing efforts. A search engine-optimized website is indispensable, especially for new founders and startups who are just positioning themselves in the market. This is the only way to reach new customers in the long term. But how can you create a website that not only gets found online, but also appeals to the very people you want to convert into paying buyers? The solution is WordPress.

What is WordPress and why can it be the right CMS for your business?

When it comes to choosing the best platform for building a website, WordPress is a term that keeps coming up. Almost a third of all websites worldwide, from small personal blogs to the complex websites of large, international corporations, are based on WordPress. It’s just one of the site builders and content management systems that users can install for free, but it has unique features that make it the most famous and popular content management system used today. Regardless of the needs of a business, the WordPress base package comes with a variety of standard and premium plugins suitable for a website. Thanks to its many themes and easy access to source files, WordPress is also endlessly adaptable to the changing needs of a business, allowing virtually anyone to create and run a website with little effort.

The advantages of WordPress

In the early years, WordPress was just a blogging platform, but it has since established itself as the leading CMS in the industry.
A website can be created and up and running in minutes without the need for in-depth technical knowledge. All a user needs is a domain (website address) and web hosting. WordPress can be installed free of charge with almost all well-known hosting providers. If your hosting provider does not have a pre-installation, you can download it for free from WordPress.org and then install it yourself. From there, an intuitive and easy-to-manage admin dashboard provides all the functionality needed to customize a site’s headline and layout, and start creating pages and posts right away.

The vast majority of users who rely on WordPress are newbies to website design. Also, they rarely have any prior knowledge of website programming and website design.

For non-technical people, WordPress is the most desirable solution as there are thousands of free website templates (themes) to choose from. There is an ideal WordPress theme for pretty much any type of website. Be it a blog, a business website or an e-commerce store.

WordPress themes can be easily customized as most of them come with their own selection panel. This allows you to change colors, upload logos, rearrange the background, design eye-catching sliders and customize the theme perfectly to your needs without having to learn any programming. WordPress themes also provide the user with a variety of options for fine-tuning the design and functionality of a new website. This is thanks to the large and growing directories of basic and premium themes. In addition, most themes can be previewed and tested in a live demo before making a decision.

Search engine optimization of a website is the key to a good ranking on Google and other search engines. A WordPress website is built using standards-compliant, high-quality code and results in semantic markup, which is the best foundation for search engine optimization. To put it in layman’s terms, one can also say that WordPress websites can be very successful in optimizing them for search engines such as Google and other search engines. This is certainly one of the reasons why WordPress websites often rank well in the search engines. This is the greatest advantage, especially for company founders and people who are new to self-employment and who are dependent on presenting themselves and their product and service portfolio in the best possible way and reaching the desired target customers.

Mobile responsiveness is also a factor in Google ranking. Therefore, websites not only have to look and work well in the desktop version, but also on mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets. WordPress offers a variety of responsive theme designs. Users can make a static website responsive with plugins and customizations to the theme files.

Since WordPress is a content management system software, it has several features that make publishing content easier. One of them is a built-in blog feature that can be accessed from any device, anytime. This eliminates the need for users who want to add a blog to their website to create one separately.

Disadvantages of WordPress

Since every coin basically has two sides, I would also like to describe the disadvantages of WordPress in more detail.

Undoubtedly the biggest negative aspect of WordPress from my point of view is the security aspect. WordPress is an open source platform and relies heavily on plugins and themes for customization. Both the plugins and themes are developed by different people and companies. Since they are not monitored by anyone, they can contain bugs, malware, or malicious lines of code. In addition, WordPress is the most popular content management system today. That fact alone makes it a prime hacker target.

It should be borne in mind that simply installing WordPress is not enough, as this platform requires a theme and at least several plugins to operate. WordPress updates can often break parts of a theme or some plugins. The more plugins you use, the more likely you are to run into compatibility issues.

WordPress often releases automatic updates, although many WordPress website developers recommend updating the WordPress core (backend), plugins, and extensions once a month. Updates help close the ever-growing WordPress security holes and allow the latest widgets and plugins to work properly. However, performing an update on your own can be daunting if you are inexperienced in the field.

A major benefit of using WordPress as a web design platform is the additional widgets, plugins, and interactivity. But these features come at a price. Each plugin increases the size of the website, and the more plugins you have, the slower the website runs and the longer it takes to load. Sometimes even just a single plugin can cause these problems. If the website is taking too long to load, prospects may visit a competitor’s website instead.

Professional support for special functions

WordPress includes all the elements needed to create a basic website. However, many users want more specific functions and complex technical details that relate to the specific requirements of their website. To make certain changes to a WordPress site, one should have knowledge of HTML, CSS, and PHP. If you want to personalize your website in a unique way or tweak the design, you might have to write numerous complicated lines of code. Without the necessary specialist knowledge, you can quickly reach your limits with the software.

Before you start wasting your valuable time, which should be used as a business founder to build your business, on complicated adjustments, it is advisable to entrust this task to experienced professionals.
