Real Media Library PRO vs Free

What is the difference between Real Media Library PRO and Free?

Our folder and file manager WordPress plugin Real Media Library is available for free on and the PRO version of the software can be purchased for a few dollars on You may be wondering what the difference between these two versions is. Let’s answer this question by looking at the features of the Real Media Library version 4.7.

Why are there two versions of the Real Media Library?

We started development of Real Media Library for WordPress in 2015 as a paid plugin. With around 20,000 users, Real Media Library PRO is one of the most popular premium plugins for WordPress to expand your media library. We decided to release a Real Media Library (free) version of the plugin to give small site users the opportunity to use Real Media Library without paying for a great plugin and to give you the opportunity to use our Try products before you pay for them.

All core features are included in the Real Media Library (free)

The free version of Real Media Library on comes with many features and without annoying animated banners advertising the PRO version right after installation. Whether you are a paid or free user of our products, we want you to feel that the functionality of our plugins is already built into the core WordPress system.

You can use most of Real Media Library’s features in the free version. Only the features shown below are only available for PRO users. The free version allows you to create unlimited main folders for free!

PRO Feature: Create subfolders

You can already create an unlimited number of main folders with the free version. For small websites that need to sort through a few hundred uploads, this is perfectly fine. But if you want to build a complex folder structure, the PRO version offers subfolders. You can nest folders as deep as you want to get the perfect structure in your library.

PRO Feature: Individual order or order according to the criteria of the uploaded media

You have already structured your media uploads in folders, but would like to have even more structure? You can arrange your files within a folder using drag & drop or have them arranged automatically for you, e.g. A-Z by title or file name. This also works in list mode. Master your media library and save time finding the right uploads!

PRO Feature: Reorder subfolders by criteria

Your folder structure can have multiple levels. Sometimes you will create many subfolders and want to rearrange them later. You can do this manually using drag & drop, or you can use our PRO feature to sort them by criteria, e.g. A-Z in ascending order.

PRO Feature: Collections and Galleries

Folders are great for structuring your media uploads, but sometimes you want more. We give you three ways to organize your files:

Binder: A folder can contain all types of files and collections, but not galleries. To create a subfolder, just click the folder icon with the little plus and give it a name.

Collections: A collection cannot contain files. But you can create other collections and galleries there. The collection is just a collection of galleries, ie they are not automatically placed on the frontend (your website). You can create a visual gallery from this gallery data folder using the Gutenberg editor in your page or post.

Galleries: A gallery data folder can only contain images. It’s easier for you to see where the galleries are on your site. You can also arrange the images in a customized order using drag-and-drop.

PRO Feature: Import/Export of folder structures

Are you using another folder plugin for your WordPress media library and are frustrated with its performance or missing features? You’re not alone! Many of our customers want to switch to Real Media Library from another plugin. We don’t want to frustrate you further by having to reorganize all your media uploads. For this purpose we have an import function that allows you to import your folders from FileBird, WP Media Folder, Advanced Media Library, Media Library Wizard and other plugins to your Real Media Library. If this isn’t really a time saver, we want to know what saves more time!
