IMDb
A dark noir retro film from Guillermo del Toro with a great cast, as well as an adaptation of the 1946 novel of the same name by William Lindsey Gresham. A classic rise and fall story in which rogue magician Stanton Carlisle makes a decent amount of money by manipulating and gullible people. But Stan’s acquaintance with a wily female psychiatrist, a typical femme fatale, leads to disastrous consequences.
“Batman” / Batman
Genre: crime detective thriller
Premiere date: 12 May
Where they showed: cinemas
IMDb
Initially, one of the most anticipated films of the year was supposed to be released in theaters on March 3, but due to the Russian occupation, the tape appeared on the big screens only in May. Nevertheless, it was worth the wait, because director Matt Reeves offered not a typical superhero blockbuster, but a leisurely neo-noir detective. This is a story about the rise of the future Dark Knight of Gotham, where superhero action has given way to a dark, pessimistic atmosphere. Robert Pattinson, by the way, did it.
Top Gun: Maverick / Top Gun: Maverick
Genre: drama, action
Premiere date: 2 June
Where they showed: cinemas
IMDb
The film, which was also postponed, more than once, but this happened due to the coronavirus pandemic. Again, all expectations were met, because the sequel to the 1986 cult film “Top Gun” turned out to be significantly cooler than the original. Just like Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is still in great shape, so this old-fashioned, but very spectacular and authentic movie is a good alternative to the current dominance of film comics or the next adventure of street racers. And this is not to mention allusions to modern realities, when American pilots must attack a heavily guarded bunker with an important target inside.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Genre: science fiction, fantasy, adventure
Premiere date: the 9th of June
Where they showed: cinemas
IMDb
Dr. Stephen Strange is forced into battle with a very powerful opponent because of the appearance of the girl America Chavez. It is thanks to her that a dangerous journey through the multiverse will take place, where the main character will meet other versions of himself. And not only yourself. After Scott Derrickson left the project, Sam Raimi joined the work, and in the local horror scenes, his hand is especially felt. Strange’s adventures turned out to be somewhat uneven, but Scarlet Witch’s bright performance, bizarre reincarnations and unexpected cameos leveled the substantive flaw.
“Elvis” / Elvis
Genre: biography, drama, music
Premiere date: 30 June
Where they showed: cinemas
IMDb
Baz Luhrmann, in his signature style, talks about the difficult fate of Elvis Presley. This is a spectacular colorful action, with a wonderful performance by Austin Butler and the good-natured Tom Hanks as an insidious manipulative villain. A bright and at the same time sad musical biopic that will be of interest not only to fans of the King of Rock and Roll, but also to all viewers who are not indifferent to tragic stories.
The Black Phone
Genre: thriller, horror, mystic
Premiere date: 30 June
Where they showed: cinemas
IMDb
Adaptation of the 2004 Joe Hill short story of the same name. Teen Finny tries to escape from the captivity of a maniac. In this, he is helped by the victims of the latter, who contact the guy using a black phone located in the basement of the villain. Director Scott Derrickson has quit working on the sequel to Doctor Strange and has begun filming more intimate material. Of course, there are allusions to the work of Stephen King, but even without them, this creepy mystical thriller can pretty much keep you in suspense.
Thor: Love and Thunder / Thor: Love and Thunder
Genre: science fiction, fantasy, adventure
Premiere date: 21 July
Where they showed: cinemas
IMDb
Thor is forced to say goodbye to the Guardians of the Galaxy, join forces with Jane Foster, who managed to “tame” Mjolnir, and join the battle with the godslayer Gorr. Taika Waititi continues to push with humor and rock, but in relation to his “Ragnarok” this is a step back. For the not very well-developed dramatic side here is in sharp conflict with the dominance of clowning. But, despite this, “Love and Grim” is still a spectacular Marvel blockbuster that can entertain well.
“Prey” / Prey
Genre: fantasy, action
Premiere date: 5th of August
Where to look: Hulu
IMDb
A prequel to the cult fantasy action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. At the beginning of the 18th century, an alien hunter landed on Earth for the first time. He will have to meet in a fierce duel with the fearless girl Naru from the Comanche tribe. Finally, we can state that the film about the Predator was a success, because it looks better than all the sequels that came out after the original. This is a tough, dynamic and exciting spectacle. And also bloody and uncompromising, as the confrontation between a man and a Predator should be. And even the modern agenda is presented unobtrusively here, and this is already worth a lot. Our review is here.
“Faster Bullet” / Bullet Train
Genre: action, comedy
Premiere date: 11th August
Where they showed: cinemas
IMDb
Entertainment in the signature style of David Leitch. This guy knows how to put on spectacular fight scenes, although things are worse with humor. The plot is based on the novel Killer Train by Kotaro Isaki. Five mercenaries have gathered in one high-speed train, each of which pursues its own goals. Of course, their paths will cross, which will lead to some completely unpredictable, wild and even funny showdowns. Our review is here.
“No” / Nope
Genre: fantasy, horror
Premiere date: August 18
Where they showed: cinemas
IMDb
Another metaphorical new wave horror from Jordan Peele. Although, of course, the genre belonging to the horrors here is very conditional. Brother and sister, owners of a rancher inherited from their father, are trying to capture a strange UFO that can take on various forms – from a cowboy hat to an ordinary sheet. But this idea will have disappointing consequences. Peel manages to perfectly intrigue and make the viewer pretty much think about what his film is about this time. Our review is here.
“Black Adam” / Black Adam
Genre: fantasy, adventure, action
Premiere date: The 20th of October
Where to look: cinemas
IMDb
So it’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s turn to try on a cramped superhero suit. Although his character Black Adam is more like an anti-hero than a noble champion of goodness and justice. Be that as it may, and in the fickle DC Universe, you never know for sure what to expect from the next project – failure or success. Our review assures the second option. Our review is here.
All Quiet on the Western Front / Im Westen nichts Neues
Genre: drama, military
Premiere date: 28 of October
Where to look: Netflix
IMDb
The third film adaptation of the classic novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque and the first performed by the Germans. This is a powerful anti-war statement. There are no heroes or full-fledged antagonists, but only characters. Their life could have turned out differently, but ends tragically. They are occupiers and there is no forgiveness for them. But besides, they are the biggest fools in the world, because for no reason they bring great grief to themselves and others. In the end, their deplorable situation and crippled destinies is also the price for the inability to reject the imposed ideas of some kind of phantom valor and honor. Whether to sympathize with these fools, or to compare with the current occupiers and hate – the viewer chooses. Our review is at this link.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” / Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Genre: fantasy, adventure, action
Premiere date: 10th of November
Where to look: cinemas
IMDb
If a gloomy November is making you feel uncomfortable, then the new Marvel blockbuster is already in a hurry to dispel them. Although, as can be seen from our review, the Black Panther sequel has a slightly more serious tone than typical MCU blockbusters. And the Wakandan flavor, spectacular fights and well-staged action can be a great distraction in this uncomfortable time of the year. Our review is here.
Avatar: The Way of Water
Genre: fantasy, adventure, action
Premiere date: December 15
Where to look: cinemas
IMDb
You can shoot a separate film about the creation of a sequel to the revolutionary hit of 2009, but the second part finally gets to the screens. James Cameron knows how to surprise, so it’s very interesting to know and see what he has prepared this time. The inhabitants of Pandora will once again have to confront human invaders. It is known that water should play an important role in the plot, which is already clear from the subtitle. Well, let’s see if the creators will be able to achieve the same impressive results at the box office as it was 13 years ago.
Knives Out: Glass Onion / Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Genre: detective, crime, comedy
Premiere date: December 23
Where to look: Netflix
IMDb
Another iconic sequel of December. The first “Knives Out” by Rian Johnson made a lot of noise and turned out to be a really solid detective story, not without a bit of satire. The second part will talk about other characters, but promises no less exciting intrigue. In addition, the cast is also filled with some stars, and Daniel Craig again acts as a quick-witted and experienced detective Benoit Blanc. This time the action will take place on a paradise island somewhere in Greece.
