Sony has seen several sequels this year, all of which fall under the “cautious sequel” formula. Horizon Forbidden West faithfully reproduces everything that was good in the original, only doing it on a bigger scale and on a bigger budget. The world has become larger, secondary tasks filled the map as if it were a new part of Assassins Creed, new mechanics and animal robots have not been forgotten either.

Where the game really stepped forward is in the visual component. Despite the open world, Forbidden West looks almost like a full-fledged next-gen project, although it was also released on PS4. For the Horizon series, Forbidden West has become something like Mass Effect 2, an intermediate project leading to a full-scale finale already in the third part. Our review of the game is here.

Elden Ring

Genre: Action RPG

Metacritic: 96/78

Platforms: PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

Hidetaka Miyazaki and FromSoftware continue to refine the SoulsBorne formula, and this time they’ve gone even further than usual. Elden Ring is the studio’s first full-fledged open-world Souls game, with George Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, also contributing to the lore.

Elden Ring is the top contender for Game of the Year and is still the highest rated game of 2022, with an average score of 96/100 on Metacritic and a 98% approval rating on Opencritic. The players, however, do not share the general enthusiasm of the reviewers and awarded the game a score of 78/100 on Metacritic.

weird west

Genre: Action RPG/Immersive

Metacritic: 81/73

Platforms: PS4, PC, Xbox One

After two years of rest, the founder and former head of Arkane Studios, Raphaël Colantonio, has created a new studio to develop small games with interesting hybrids of genres. The first game was Weird West, a top-down action game with immersive simulation elements, which caused questions from the players after the announcement.

After the release, this unusual combination of genre and approach to game design paid off, players and critics noted the variability of passing missions, the use of many improvised ways to overcome opponents, and the impact of choice on the development of characters and events of the game.

Dying Light 2 Stay Human

Genre: Action RPG, Survival Horror

Metacritic: 76/50

Platforms: PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

Dying Light 2 Stay Human received mixed reviews from the press, some people did not like the story, poor optimization of the game on PC, or other minor flaws. But despite all the cons, Dying Light 2 is the only first-person action game with incredibly detailed parkour, a sense of dynamics and environments that encourage you to move around the city on your own and almost forget about fast travel.

And also, in our opinion, the game has interesting secondary tasks that are down to earth and tell almost everyday stories of ordinary people in a world where survival comes first. Our review is here.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope

Genre: Turn-based strategy, action-adventure

Metacritic: 86/78

Platforms: switch

If you look at the releases of recent years, turn-based strategies will be lost in this list among other, more popular genres, and therefore each such game must be mentioned separately. Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is already a sequel to the crossover between Nintendo’s Mario and Ubisoft’s rabbits, which at one time became so numerous that it began to really annoy.

In the new game, the battlefield grid has been redesigned, Mario can now be replaced by another character, there are activities outside the battlefield and many other minor improvements and improvements.

Bayonetta 3

Genre: Action-Adventure, Hack and Slash

Metacritic: 86/74

Platforms: switch

Bayonetta 3 has been in development for more than five years, at some point the fans even had time to despair, but is the project even alive. Like the sequel, the game is a Nintendo Switch exclusive and according to the press and developers, the console was unable to pull off the primary concept of an open world game, and the limited power of the Switch did not allow to fully reveal the existing art of the game.

But what the game has no problems with is the gameplay. Locations have grown in size, new mechanics have been added, and combat dynamics have increased compared to previous games in the series. Since the release of Devil May Cry 5, this is the first AAA slasher that should not be missed by a fan of the genre.

Stray

Genre: Adventure

Metacritic: 83/85

Platforms: PS4, PS5, PC

Stray tried to pass itself off as a simple game for lovers of furry beasts and kings of sloth, also in a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk setting. In fact, this is an almost immersive simulator about robots that once served people, and over time gained consciousness and began to imitate the life of their former owners. And the cat is here only for a run, he is an accidental guide through the unknown world of the future. On PC, the game has several fan localizations in Ukrainian. Our review is here.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Genre: platform

Metacritic: 85/88

Platforms: switch

The unknown magic of Nintendo games works regardless of your age and the visual design of the game. Whether you’re 7 or 70, Kirby and the Forgotten Land is still highly recommended. This is a pleasant platformer with a positive mood and interesting mechanics of absorbing everything that is poorly screwed, which will ultimately help in solving interesting puzzles, puzzles and overcoming obstacles.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge

Genre: Beat ’em up

Metacritic: 85/85

Platforms: PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch

A small French publisher Dotemu is slowly resurrecting the Beat ’em up genre. First, the iconic Streets of Rage series was revived with the release of the successful fourth game in the series, and now it’s the turn of the no less iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who have been unlucky with games in recent years. The return to the classics delighted the players, and the ability to engage in scuffle with six players at the same time made the game a must for theme parties, or just a large group of friends.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Genre: action jRPG

Metacritic: 89/85

Platforms: switch

A party-based JRPG in which you can explore the largest open world in the series in the company of six characters at the same time and try to understand the reasons for the enmity of the peoples of Aionios, a world in which there has long been a war between supporters of magic and technology.

Gran Turismo 7

Genre: Action RPG

Metacritic: 87/21

Platforms: PS4, PS5

Gran Turismo 7’s approach to monetization has angered players (look at the user ratings), but outside of donations it’s still one of the best driving sims for the general public, with lots of cars, tracks, activities, and an entire automotive museum. A game for those who do not just love racing, but for true motorsport enthusiasts.

Return to Monkey Island

Genre: Graphic adventure / Quest

Metacritic: 86/75

Platforms: PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch

The genre of classic quests has practically disappeared, or turned into what we now call interactive cinema. It is all the more joyful to meet a classic representative of the genre, also in a series that was once a blockbuster of the genre. Return to Monkey Island doesn’t taunt players with tricky puzzles like the old games, instead it offers quite logical riddles so as not to tear the player away from an interesting story.

God of War Ragnarök

Genre: Action-Adventure, Hack and Slash

Metacritic: 94/84

Platforms: PS4, PS5

God of War Ragnarök caused a real flurry of discussions, some call the game the best this year, while others are disappointed that the game did not live up to their expectations, remaining just a good sequel that does not bring the series to a new level.

The truth is somewhere in the middle, and the game is currently the second most rated game of the year behind Elden Ring and is FromSoftware’s main competitor for the coveted Game of the Year title. Our review after 10 hours of play can be read here.

Need for Speed Unbound

Genre: Racing

Release date: December 02

Platforms: PS5, PC, Xbox Series X|S

The Need for Speed series has been in limbo for the past few years, and it depends on Unbound whether it gets out of it, or dies completely for the next ten years. Inside the studio, they really believe in this project, and who are we to destroy this belief. And the soundtrack of the game will include several Ukrainian performers.

The Callisto Protocol

Genre: survival horror

Release date: December 02

Platforms: PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S

The Callisto Protocol comes out only in early December, but in advance the game can already be added to the list of interesting releases of the year. There is only one reason for such confidence – the people who once created the original Dead Space are responsible for the development, and the new game looks like a modern version of the already cult series.

Space station, monsters, mysteries and a lot of bloody ways to die. Only the absence of the game in the Ukrainian PS Store and the complete disregard of the Ukrainian fan base of the game by the publisher cause concern.
