Tesla’s AI boss Karpathy is leaving the company after five years

Andrei Karpathy leaves Tesla. The company’s AI boss and the carmaker went their separate ways after five years, Karpathy announced in a tweet late Wednesday night.

Karpathy did not give reasons for the separation in his tweet. In the field of artificial intelligence (AI), he was responsible, among other things, for Tesla’s autopilot unit, which is a kind of driving assistant in electric cars. Elon Musk’s company recently faced a large number of accidents with the driving assistant and an extended investigation by the driver safety authority on the subject of autopilot in the USA.

According to a report by CNBC, numerous high-ranking machine learning experts and engineers reported directly to Karpathy, who had recently taken a month-long break.

In late 2016, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who is currently being sued by Twitter over a possible failed takeover of Twitter, announced that a self-driving car would be able to drive coast-to-coast in the US by the end of 2017, CNBC reports. Tesla has not yet implemented this plan.

In its vehicles, Tesla offers drivers automated navigation, lane assistants and “Cruise Control” based on the current traffic situation.

The now outgoing Karpathy revealed in another tweet that he has no concrete plans for the time after Tesla. However, he is looking forward to wanting to devote more time to technical work in the field of artificial intelligence as well as open source and educational projects.
