SYSTEM OF A DOWN’s “Toxicity” Music Video Hits One Billion YouTube Views
In a remarkable milestone for rock music, the music video for System of a Down’s iconic track “Toxicity” has officially surpassed one billion views on YouTube. This achievement, announced on January 30, 2025, highlights the enduring popularity of the band and their music, particularly as “Toxicity” becomes their second song to reach this significant landmark; the first was “Chop Suey!” which hit a billion views back in November 2020.
The Visual Narrative of “Toxicity”
Released on YouTube in October 2009, the “Toxicity” video is a striking visual experience. Co-directed by Marcos Siega, known for his work with bands like 311 and Weezer, alongside System of a Down’s bassist Shavo Odadjian, the video opens with scenes from the Hollywood Walk of Fame before transitioning to the band’s electrifying performance. One notable detail is guitarist Daron Malakian’s Los Angeles Kings jersey, which he wears throughout the video. A close-up shot of drummer John Dolmayan reveals a double-bass pedal attachment, although he does not utilize it during the song.
The video also weaves in poignant imagery, featuring projections of homeless individuals lined along the streets during the verses. After the second chorus, Malakian plays a rapid riff in fast motion, while the band appears to freeze, creating a visually compelling sequence as a crowd slowly emerges to join them. Fans can be seen singing along and creating a vibrant circle pit, illuminated by glow-sticks. In a nod to the lyrics, the band humorously depicts the act of “eating seeds as a pastime activity,” reminiscent of a scene from the “Chop Suey!” video where lead vocalist Serj Tankian is shown eating the dish. The video concludes with a breathtaking shot of the Milky Way.

Upcoming Performances and Tour Plans
Moreover, System of a Down is set to embark on their “Wake Up! South America” tour this spring, marking their first visit to the continent since 2015. The tour will begin on April 24 in Bogotá, Colombia, and will include shows in Lima, Peru, as well as performances in Chile, Argentina, and Brazil, concluding with three shows in Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo.
Recent Music Releases
Although System of a Down has been touring intermittently since their hiatus ended in 2011, they have only released two new songs in nearly two decades: “Protect The Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz.” Released in November 2020, these tracks were inspired by the conflict between Artsakh and Azerbaijan, with all proceeds directed towards humanitarian efforts in their ancestral homeland of Armenia. Through the band’s initiatives and fan contributions, they have successfully raised over $600,000 for this cause.
