Paul Mescal Emerges as New Frontrunner for Next James Bond Role, Ousting Aaron Taylor-Johnson
Aaron Taylor-Johnson, previously considered the leading candidate to take on the iconic role of James Bond, has lost his frontrunner status as a new competitor emerges. The actor, known for his performances in films like Kick-Ass, Bullet Train, and the recently released Kraven the Hunter, had long been the bookmakers’ favorite to succeed Daniel Craig in the coveted role of 007.
Earlier this year, speculation suggested that Taylor-Johnson had even received a formal offer for the role, but Eon Productions quickly dispelled those rumors. Despite this, many industry insiders continued to view him as the top choice to inherit the mantle of the world’s most famous spy.
As the calendar approaches 2025, Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are keeping fans on edge regarding the next casting decision, although they have confirmed that the character will remain male. In a recent statement, Wilson mentioned the significance of casting a new actor, emphasizing how each new Bond brings a fresh perspective and direction to the franchise.
Now, Paul Mescal, celebrated for his roles in Normal People and the upcoming Gladiator II, has surged ahead in the betting markets, overtaking Taylor-Johnson as the new favorite to embody Bond. According to Lee Phelps from William Hill, Mescal’s impressive performance in Gladiator II has significantly shifted the odds in his favor, moving him from 7/1 to a leading 6/4 within just 24 hours.
Despite this shift, Taylor-Johnson hasn’t dropped too far behind, currently sitting at 7/4 odds. Other contenders include Theo James at 7/2 and Jack Lowden at 5/1, both of whom have also gained traction in the race for the role.
James has recently gained recognition for his performance in the Netflix series The Gentlemen, while Lowden has captured audiences’ attention with his role in Apple TV’s Slow Horses.
While Taylor-Johnson remains a strong contender, the landscape has certainly changed, with multiple actors now vying for the spotlight. Outside bets include Callum Turner, Lucien Laviscount, and Henry Cavill, with odds of 7/1, 9/1, and 11/1 respectively. Additionally, Regé-Jean Page and Damson Idris are seen as intriguing long shots at 12/1.
