Today Nvidia announced the debut of the $2,249 GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. After an inexplicable delay after the January announcement, Asus, Colorful, EVGA, Gainward, Galax, Gigabyte, INNO3D, MSI, Palit, PNY, and Zotac will begin retailing the “world’s fastest GPU” today.

The RTX 3090 Ti has the same Triple slot design like the RTX 3090 and the two cards look similar at first glance. Nvidia boosts the performance of its current 8nm GA102 processor in the RTX 3090 Ti by pairing it with 24GB of GDDR6X running at 21GB/s. That’s the same amount of VRAM as the RTX 3090, but with an almost 7.7% higher memory frequency, resulting in a total memory bandwidth of 1008 GB/s.

RTX 3090 Ti especially for creatives and professionals

According to Nvidia, the RTX 3090 Ti will be one GPU performance of 40 teraflops with a base speed of 1560 MHz and a peak clock of 1860 MHz. That’s an increase over the RTX 3090, which has 36 teraflops, a base clock of 1395MHz, and a boost clock of 1695MHz. The RTX 3090 TI is also equipped with 10,752 CUDA cores, 78 RT TFLOPs and 320 Tensor TFLOPs. Nvidia promises that the RTX 3090 Ti will be on average 64% faster than the RTX 2080 Ti and 9% faster than the RTX 3090 in terms of gaming performance will be. While Nvidia promoted the RTX 3090 extensively at launch, the company is targeting creatives, professionals, and anyone else looking for the fastest GPU for gaming or creative work with the RTX 3090 Ti.

The RTX 3090 Ti is optimized for large projects in applications like Blender, Maya or Cinema4D as well as for research systems of data scientists working with huge data sets. The RTX 3090 Ti can also be useful for certain tasks for developers and animators of computer-generated imagery who work with large sets, high-resolution textures and realistic models.

High power demand

However, the RTX 3090 Ti will have significant power requirements. You need a power source that can deliver at least 850 watts, since the card consumes up to 450 watts (some cards will probably exceed this value). That’s an increase over the RTX 3090, which required 350 watts and a 750-watt power supply. Also, Nvidia ditched the 12-pin connector in favor of the 16-pin PCIe Gen5 power cable. Since most power sources don’t have the necessary cables, Nvidia offers a dongle that requires three 8-pin connectors.

Of course, the cost will put many people off the RTX 3090 Ti, especially those interested in gaming, as it comes with a premium of 30% compared to the RTX 3090, while only a 9% increase in performance is promised. However, if you want to brag about owning the “fastest graphics card in the world”, Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3090 Ti is available now for €2,249.
