Managing Unused Images with WP Optimize: A Guide to Image Optimization in WordPress

Managing images effectively is essential for maintaining a well-optimized WordPress site. When you upload images, WordPress handles them in two main ways: the actual image files are stored on the server, typically within the ‘wp-content/uploads’ folder, and a corresponding record is created in the Media Library database. This record includes metadata such as the image title, description, and alt text.

Moreover, WordPress generates multiple sizes of each uploaded image—usually thumbnail, small, medium, and large. This can lead to a cluttered uploads directory filled with images that are no longer in use. For users of WP-Optimize Premium, it is possible to easily identify and manage these unused images.

How WP-Optimize Detects Unused Images

WP-Optimize scans both the server storage and the Media Library database for images. The plugin checks each detected image against posts, pages, and custom post types (like FAQs or eCommerce products) to see if they are featured or embedded. Any image that cannot be matched with a database record will be flagged as unused.

It’s important to note that some themes or page builders may access images differently, which could lead to incorrect flags for unused images. If you’re uncertain about the status of an image, it’s prudent to double-check before deleting and ensure you have a recent backup of your site.

Steps to Remove Unused Images

To start managing your images, navigate to the ‘Images’ tab in the WP-Optimize admin dashboard and click on the “Unused images and sizes” section.

  • Click the “Scan website for unused images” button. WP-Optimize will examine both the Media Library and the ‘wp-content/uploads’ directory to find any images not attached to posts or pages.
  • You will see a list of all unused images on your site. You can select images individually or choose the “Select all” option to delete them all at once.
  • After making your selection, scroll down and opt for either “Move selected images to trash” or “Delete the selection permanently.” WP-Optimize will remove the selected image files and their corresponding entries in the Media Library.

Once the process is complete, you will receive a notification confirming the deletion.

Managing Image Sizes

WordPress typically creates three sizes for each uploaded image, but not all of these sizes may be utilized. With WP-Optimize Premium, you have the option to view and delete any registered image sizes that are not in use by clicking on “Scan website for unused image sizes.”

Restoring Images from Trash

If you’re unsure about permanently deleting an image, you can opt to move it to the trash instead. To view and restore trashed images, simply click the “view trash” button. Here, you can select any images you wish to keep and click “Restore the selection” to return them to your Media Library.

Backup Recommendations

Before making any significant changes or optimizations with WP-Optimize, it is advisable to create a backup of your site. WP-Optimize seamlessly integrates with the UpdraftPlus backup plugin. If UpdraftPlus is active on your site, you’ll have the option to take an automatic backup prior to deleting any images.
