Install WordPress: Website in 15 minutes

Do you finally want to create your own website or blog? In my guide I will show you how to install WordPress quickly and easily. Either manually or via a 1-click installation with the provider.

Before you can get started with your first WordPress site, you need a domain and a provider. In addition to sufficient web space, the hosting should meet the following requirements:

  • MySQL 5.6 or higher
  • PHP from version 7
  • SSL support

If you haven’t decided on a host yet, you might find a suitable one in my web host overview.

if you then Install WordPress you have three options:

  • Install WordPress manually
  • 1-click installation at the provider
  • Local WordPress installation (XAMPP)

In my instructions, I will explain step by step how you can install WordPress manually or automatically. The whole thing takes about 15-30 minutes. And your own website is ready to go!

I will only briefly present the local WP installation, as it is not suitable for a live site.

1. Install WordPress manually

I prefer to install WordPress manually. This way I can see exactly what is set up where and how. And for WordPress beginners, this also results in a learning effect. This is how you acquire basic technical knowledge. And terms such as FTP, server or database are no longer foreign words.

1. Preparation at the provider

Before you can get started, you should first log into your provider’s customer menu. Because there you have to make some preparations now.

Where exactly the settings can be found depends on the respective hoster. For these instructions I install WordPress at all-inkl.

It’s best to write down the access data right away. So you don’t have to search long during the WordPress installation.

You should do these steps before the installation:

  • Set up FTP access
Here you need the server name, username and password.
  • Create MySQL database
Again, make a note of the database name, database username, and password. With some hosters you still need the MySQL server address.
  • Enable SSL
Most providers offer a free SSL certificate. Subsequent SSL conversion is possible, but more time-consuming.

Here are the screenshots from the customer menu:

2. Download WordPress

Download from WordPress (German)

Do you have all the necessary information from the hoster? Then you can now download the German version of WordPress from Then unpack the ZIP archive on your computer.

The WordPress folder contains three folders and some files. These will be loaded onto your web server in the next step.

2. Upload data via FTP

Next, transfer the files to your server. For this you need an FTP program such as FileZilla (FileZilla client).

Here you click > File > Server Manager > New Server. Then you enter the access data. Then click on “Connect”.

Screenshot Filezilla Set up FTP connection in FileZilla

In the “Server” field, it is often sufficient if you simply enter your domain. For example “”

Once connected, you can upload the files from the unzipped WordPress folder. Either via the context menu or simply by drag & drop.

You can find details and tips on the subject of FTP in my instructions for setting up WordPress FTP access.

3. Install WordPress: the 5-minute install

Once the upload is complete, go to your website. So The WordPress installation routine will now start. From now on you simply follow the instructions.

WordPress Installation - Database Info

First, the access data to the database are requested.

  1. Database name
  2. User name
  3. database password
  4. database host
With most providers it is sufficient to enter “localhost” here. Your provider may have other information about this.
  5. table prefix
For security reasons you should change the table prefix. So instead of wp_ e.g. J3ky8wp_ . So a random combination of letters and digits.

If all data is correct, you should see the following message.

Successful database connection Connection to database was successful.

As soon as you click the button, the famous 5-minute installation will start. From now on it’s really only 5 minutes…

Install WordPress - set login data Here you specify the login data.

Finally, you now set the access data and information for your site.

  1. Website title
The visible name of your website / blog. You can change this at any time in the dashboard.
  2. User name
Then log into WordPress with that username. For security reasons, you should not just use “Admin” here.
  3. password
WP creates an automatic and strong password. It’s best to make a note of it right away so that there are no problems when logging in.
  4. e-mail
This e-mail is entered in the system. Important if you ever forget your password.
  5. Visibility for search engines
Should your website be indexed by search engines? If you want to test it out first, you should tick this box.

As soon as the WordPress installation is complete, you can log in directly to the dashboard.

2. WordPress 1-click installation

Almost all hosters offer a 1-click installation of WordPress. This makes the installation a little faster and more convenient. Because you don’t have to worry about FTP servers or databases. Sounds pretty good so far. And for many users, this is certainly a very good solution as well.

However, there can also be disadvantages to the automatic installation. Because some providers already set some WordPress settings. Or install plugins. This could then lead to problems later.

For these instructions, I use the one-click installation for all-inclusive as an example. With other hosters such as Strato, Ionos or Hosteurope, the WP installation works according to the same principle.

If you want to get started with WordPress even faster, I recommend Raidboxes. Because with the specialized WordPress hosting everything is already prepared.

1. Select software

In the left menu you select the item “Software Installation”. Then you search for in the list WordPress.

2. Select domain

Then you select the domain on which you want to install WP. Below you can see the folder path on the FTP server.

3. Set up database

Now you either select an existing database or create a new one. If you create a new one, all-inclusive takes over. the complete facility. So you don’t have to adjust anything anymore.

4. Set up admin access

Before WordPress is installed, you must enter the login data for WordPress.

Set WP access dataHere you enter the login information for WordPress.

As with the manual installation, you now specify the access data for WordPress.

  1. Log in
  2. admin mail
  3. password

Then you confirm the two checkboxes and you can have WordPress installed.

Finally, the setup wizard shows you an overview of the data that has been created. If you wish, you can also have the access data sent to you by e-mail.
Important: For security reasons, you should change your password after logging in for the first time.

Installation will startWordPress will be installed automatically.

After just a few minutes you can log in to your new page. You can find the admin area, i.e. the WordPress login, at

With the 1-click WordPress installation of all-inclusive. the following adjustments are made:

3. Install WordPress locally

Prefer to install WordPress locally on your computer? The best way to do this is to use the XAMPP software package.

Install WordPress locally - XAMPP XAMPP for a WordPress installation on your local computer

Because it contains all the components that WordPress needs.

  • Apache
  • MySQL (MariaDB)
  • PHP
  • Perl

After installing XAMPP you have a local development environment. And of course you can also install WordPress here and work on it offline.

I also used XAMPP a lot in the past. The main reason for this was the very slow internet connection at the time. In the meantime, I no longer see any advantage in running WP locally.

Because a test page is quick and easy to set up on a subdomain. And if you want to set up a staging site, you can use WP Staging for that.

4. Tips

Configuration file wp-config

The basic WordPress settings are stored in the configuration file wp-config.php saved. For example, if you get an error with the database connection, you can check the entries here.

wp-config.php Entries DBDatabase entries in wp-config.php

If you want to edit this file, you should use a suitable program for this. For example Notepad++ or a simple text editor. Definitely not Word.

5. The next steps

WordPress theme

Did you successfully install WordPress? Then you can next choose a design for your website. Some standard themes are already available to you immediately after installation. Of course, you can also install other WordPress themes.

Here are a few theme suggestions:

WordPress plugins

In order to expand the range of functions, you can also use numerous extensions. You can currently find over 57,000 free plugins in the official WordPress directory.

I explain how easy the plugin installation is in my quick guide to installing WordPress plugins.
