Independent Gas Stations Voice Concerns Over Sheetz Expansion in Michigan

(CBS DETROIT) – The popular gas station chain Sheetz is set to expand its footprint in Michigan, with plans for 50 to 60 new locations over the next five years. This ambitious growth has raised alarms among independent gas station owners who fear they may struggle to compete.

Panel Discussion Addresses Concerns

To address these anxieties, the Middle East and Northern African Chamber of Commerce (MENA) hosted a panel discussion on Tuesday. Local business owners voiced their concerns, particularly about the implications of Sheetz’s expansion on smaller competitors.

Local Business Struggles

Jay Hammoud, a convenience store owner, shared his personal experience at the event. He was recently denied a license to open a gas station in Eastpointe, with city officials citing Michigan’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 as the reason. Ironically, just a year later, the same site was approved for a new Sheetz location, which will be significantly larger than Hammoud’s planned station.

“Why did you allow Sheetz a year later to develop in Eastpointe, when they will be three times larger than my proposed gas station?” questioned Faye Nemer, representing MENA. “We’re not against competition, but we want fairness and consistency in how regulations are applied.”

Local Opposition to Sheetz

In a related incident, residents of Farmington Hills expressed their discontent during a city council meeting in September, protesting a potential Sheetz development on Middlebelt Road. They emphasized the threat it poses to existing independent gas stations that are vital to the community.

Nasir Siddiqui, who supplies fuel to numerous small gas stations in the area, underscored the seriousness of these concerns. “The massive volume that Sheetz brings could drive our local businesses to the brink,” he stated.

Sheetz Responds

Although Sheetz representatives did not attend the panel, they issued a statement asserting their commitment to positively impacting Southeast Michigan. They emphasized that their stores will serve as community hubs where families can gather, offering a full-service kitchen, free internet, and comfortable seating.

Moreover, Sheetz claims that each new store will create 30 to 35 jobs with competitive wages and benefits, including medical, dental, and tuition reimbursement. The company also highlighted its community engagement efforts, such as regular food donations and support for local initiatives, including the Special Olympics.

As Sheetz forges ahead with its expansion in the Detroit area, the ongoing dialogue between independent gas station owners and the corporate giant continues to unfold, raising questions about the future of local businesses in a rapidly changing landscape.
