Google Manager: Young people prefer to search via Tiktok and Instagram

For younger people, social media such as Tiktok and Instagram are the first point of contact on the Internet – no longer Google Maps or Google Search. This was explained by Google manager Prabhakar Raghavan to the US portal Techcrunch. This means that these social media are serious competition for Google. Raghavan is Senior Vice President at Google and leads the Knowledge & Information department.

In a conversation at the Brainstorm Tech 2022 conference, which dealt with the development of search on the web, Raghavan came up with the topic rather casually, reports Techcrunch. He explained that young people would search the web very differently than older people. If they are looking for a restaurant, for example, 40 percent of young users would not open Google Maps or Google Search, but Tiktok or Instagram.

Google has therefore confirmed the manager’s statements to Techcrunch. They are based on internal studies, which include a survey of US users aged 18 to 24. According to Raghavan, young people would generally prefer “visually richer forms” of searching. As a negative example, he cited the look of Google Maps, which is based on printed maps – a medium that young people hardly come into contact with anymore.

As an alternative, Google Maps now has an augmented reality function in which directional arrows appear in the real environment on the smartphone camera image. At its Google I/O developer conference in May, the group also announced immersive views for maps. As early as the end of 2021, a ranking by the cloud provider Cloudflare suggested that Tiktok was the most frequently accessed web address and no longer Google.
