Free WordPress Themes, the best of the best for 2022

You don’t necessarily have to spend money on your new website. There are many very good themes that are completely free. Below are the 5 best free WordPress themes I’ve picked. Below the short description is a link to the full theme reviews.

1. Astra

The Astra theme has become one of the most popular themes for WordPress and is already active on 2 million websites. Both the free and pro versions are great in their class. First and foremost, Astra is the fastest loading WordPress theme, but it also stands out for some other qualities, such as suitability for e-commerce purposes or web shop creation. All the gadgets like quick view, wish list and ajax shopping cart, Astra has it all and much more. Finally, I mention the eye-catching designs that can be built into your website with 1-click demo. Astra is great!

2nd Ocean WP

Another very good free WP theme is Ocean-WP. Like Astra, it was developed with fast loading times and web shop building in mind. Ocean-WP team did a good job and the theme is highly rated and already installed on about 800,000 websites. Ocean-WP also provides all professional options for stores like Wishlist, Ajax Cart, Quick View and Quick Search. Both Astra and Ocean-WP can be used on unlimited number of sites in Pro version and later upgrade will not cost you much money. Whether you want to build a shop or a regular site, Ocean-WP is your theme and it’s free to download on WordPress.org.

3. Generatepress

There is 1 topic that Astra can stand up to when we talk about loading speed and that is Generatepress. I don’t think it’s any faster, but Generatepress’s core code is still slightly smaller than Astra’s at only 19 KB. This theme offers many beautiful demo layouts editable with all top page builders like Divibuilder, Beaverbuilder and Elementor. By default, Generatepress comes with built-in schema markup that will make your pages rank higher and better in Google. The complete SEO of the theme is also very well put together. This is easily one of the coolest free themes and ideal for all types of websites.

4. Neve

Another theme with great loading times and webshop features, but Neve excels at something else entirely. Like Astra, it offers one-click demos that you can install on your site, built with the top page builders. For example, the Pro version of the theme offers 122 niche layouts for Elementor alone. 99 more for the beaver builder and then we still have 2 page builders ahead of us. The Neve theme comes in combination with spectacular plugins, which Neve himself calls “boosters”, such as the Header Booster. Check out my full review via the link below.

5. Cadence

If newbie Kadence already has 80,000 active installs and a clean rating, where does that lead with this theme? Kadence has a bright future and is popular in both free and pro versions. The only thing they still have to work on is the number of demo layouts, because that’s a bit sparse. Over time these will surely come because for now the 12 demos they have is enough for me. I once ranked this theme #5 for free WP themes. Kadence works perfectly with Gutenberg or Elementor and even has integrated schema markup like Generatepress.

In the meantime, if you’ve decided to maybe invest a little in your theme, check out my best WordPress themes with pro versions.
