Anyone wanting to publish a website must first make the basic decision of whether to create HTML and CSS code by hand or rely on tools for building and maintaining websites. For the former you need one

If you like to design everything yourself down to the smallest detail and enjoy tracking down tiny code errors in pages of source code, this method is the right one for you. The websites are usually created on your own computer and then uploaded to the hoster’s web space using an FTP client such as Filezilla.

Both systems require a substructure consisting of the MySQL database system and the script language PHP (and usually run on a Linux server with an Apache web server – such a system is known by the abbreviation LAMP). Once you have MySQL, PHP and the actual CMS set up and running, you can quickly and easily publish content without coming into contact with the source code. Incidentally, most CMS require PHP and MySQL, but a few CMS also work without a database server or are based on Java or Microsoft .net.

For a long time, these classic CMS have had competition from the popular blog software WordPress. With the right themes and plugins, WordPress can certainly be expanded into a powerful content management system.
