Forgot the PIN for the e-passport

When I tried to log into the Elster portal, I realized that I had messed around with the PIN for my e-perso. We don’t have appointments with the residents’ registration office for several months. Is there a faster way online?

You can order a so-called PIN reset letter, which you can use to reset the forgotten PIN. All you need is your identity card with eID function, a smartphone with NFC interface and the AusweisApp2. From there, call up “Change my PIN” and select “PIN unknown”. The app then calls up an external link that you can use to place the order.

In our test, we did not succeed at first because the necessary eID link could not be called up on the smartphone. In this case there is a workaround: Use the smartphone as an external eID reader for your Windows PC. All you have to do is install and open the AusweisApp2 on both devices. On the smartphone, i.e. the reader, call up the “Start pairing” function under “Remote access”, then look for the device in the app on the PC under “Settings/Smartphone as card reader” and click on it. Now all you have to do is enter the pairing code displayed on the smartphone so that the devices connect. You can then request the PIN reset letter on the PC, which will be sent to your current registered address.

As soon as you have set up your new PIN using the letter, you can use your eID not only to identify yourself at Elster, but also when you activate prepaid cards or open bank accounts. In addition, the use of the eID saves you having to appear in person at many authorities.

In order to use a smartphone with an NFC interface as an external eID reader for the PC, you must enter a code displayed there on the PC.
