Ethereum mining: Many graphics cards continue to mine

Crypto mining with graphics cards continues to enjoy great popularity despite the recent price slumps. In the case of the cryptocurrency Ethereum, there is a dent in the available computing power, but it is still at a high level. The network is currently calculating more than 926 terahashes per second – that corresponds to 926 trillion calculations every second.

For classification: In December 2021 that was still a record value. In the meantime, the computing power has increased to more than 1.1 petahashes per second. Since then, the value of an ether – the coin currency of Ethereum – has crashed from more than 4000 to at times well below 1000 euros. Since mid-June, the price has stabilized at 1,000 to 1,200 euros.

The computing power in the Ethereum network and the price development of graphics cards have run parallel to each other over long periods of time over the past two years. Ethereum is the most lucrative and therefore the most popular cryptocurrency for mining with graphics cards. Specialized ASIC miners such as Bitmain’s Antminer E9 are gradually entering the market, but they are inflexible and an uncertain investment due to the planned mining shutdown.

Even now, the graphics card prices are stable again after a temporary sell-off mood. Mid-range and high-end models like the GeForce RTX 3080 and Radeon RX 6800 XT continue to cost more than AMD and Nvidia recommended for launch in 2020. Admittedly, the euro exchange rate has deteriorated since then, but prices at the RRP level are atypical, especially at the end of the life of a generation of graphics cards. The first GeForce RTX 4000 and Radeon RX 7000 should appear in 2022.
