EPA Honors Maine Wastewater Treatment Leaders for Excellence in Water Quality Management

BOSTON (January 30, 2025) – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized outstanding contributions to wastewater treatment in Maine through its prestigious 2024 Regional Wastewater Treatment Awards. These awards highlight the commitment of facilities and individuals dedicated to enhancing water quality across New England.

Celebrating Excellence in Wastewater Management

For over 40 years, the EPA Regional Wastewater Awards Program has honored professionals in the wastewater sector who have significantly impacted public service through the management and operations of treatment facilities. This year, two exceptional entities stood out in Maine.

2024 Regional Industrial Pretreatment Program Excellence Award

The York Sewer District, under the leadership of Theresa Tucker, was awarded for its exemplary efforts in inspecting, permitting, and sampling industrial users that discharge waste into the municipal collection system. This recognition places the York Sewer District among an elite group, as it was one of only two facilities in New England to receive this award.

The EPA’s Regional Industrial Pretreatment Program Excellence Award aims to commend personnel from publicly owned wastewater treatment plants for their dedication to safeguarding water quality through meticulous oversight of industrial discharges.

2024 EPA Regional Wastewater Trainer of the Year

Dr. Patrick Wiley, an instructor at Southern Maine Community College, was honored as the 2024 EPA Regional Wastewater Trainer of the Year. His exceptional contributions to training wastewater operators throughout Maine earned him this accolade, making him one of only two individuals recognized in New England.

This award was established to acknowledge trainers who provide outstanding education to wastewater sector operators. As the field of wastewater management evolves, operators must complete extensive training and ongoing education to stay informed about the latest technologies, contaminants, and regulatory requirements.

Significance of the Awards

The recognition from the EPA highlights not just individual and facility achievements, but also underscores the importance of continuous improvement in environmental practices. As water quality remains a pressing concern, these awards serve as a reminder of the dedication and hard work required to maintain and enhance wastewater treatment standards.
