Chatbot LaMDA: Google fires Blake Lemoine

Google has fired software engineer Blake Lemoine — the employee who was furloughed in mid-June this year after believing a Google AI was conscious and capable of developing feelings like humans.

As Google confirmed to the BBC on Friday, Lemoine has been fired; the 42-year-old would now like to obtain legal support. Lemoine’s conviction that the chatbot AI LaMDA had developed consciousness triggered some technical and philosophical contributions and discussions after the leave of absence became known.
