Apple releases revised maps for three more countries

Apple has thoroughly overhauled the maps in its Maps service in three other countries. France, Monaco and New Zealand are new. This means that a total of 16 countries, including Germany, now have a high level of detail. It’s the third-biggest map overhaul since the service’s renovation began.

The renewed maps are far more detailed, for example in the display of green areas. The 3D images of buildings also correspond more to reality or depict houses that were not visible before. Apple started its initiative to improve the maps four years ago, in 2018, with iOS 12. First, the better maps right on Apple’s doorstep, in the greater San Francisco area, were adjusted. The maps for Germany were revised and made available in April 2022.

According to Eddy Cue, who is responsible for maps at Apple, millions of changes have been made and new places added. In addition to the fundamental revision, Apple will also update the new map material more frequently from now on. The better map material is based, among other things, on tracking shots by Apple vehicles, which measure their surroundings using cameras, GPS and lidar sensors.

Currently the USA, Great Britain, Ireland, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Italy, San Marino, Vatican City, Andorra, Australia, Germany, Singapore, France, Monaco and New Zealand can be found with improved maps in the service.

Apple has already announced other countries for iOS 16. These include Belgium, Israel, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, the Palestinian territories, Saudi Arabia and Switzerland.
