Amazon AWS Cloud WAN generally available

Amazon has announced the general availability of AWS Cloud WAN. It is a service for the central administration of different networks, for example between several company locations, between a company’s data center and its cloud provider, VPNs or SD-WAN solutions. The service has been in preview status since December 2021 and is now part of the general AWS portfolio.

Cloud WAN creates a unified virtual network from all of a company’s WAN connections, regardless of the underlying technology, which is managed via a central management dashboard. Administrators can segment networks, set policies, automate configuration and security settings, restrict or redirect data traffic between specific branch offices.

In addition to the dashboard, the central policy management can also be addressed via an API. Access and routing rules for the entire network are contained in a JSON file, and a two-stage approval process is intended to avoid misconfigurations.

In addition to various network technologies such as MPLS networks or Layer 3 VPNs, the integration of Amazon’s own offerings such as Virtual Private Cloud and Transit Gateway is of course also planned.

AWS bills the costs by the hour, based on the number of central connection points, known as the core network edge, the volume of data transferred, the number of networks to be managed that dock to the core network edge and the number of transit gateways that are in peering with the core network edge. A blog post on Amazon describes details about AWS Cloud WAN.
