If you want to switch your site from http to https with an SSL certificate, you are unfortunately wrong here. But we also have the right answers for you: You can access our article on converting your WordPress website to https here.

For everyone else: Let’s start!

What is the difference between SiteURL and Home URL?

Yours Home URL is the web address of your website. Users of your site enter this in the address bar of the browser to get to your WordPress site. The home URL is also often referred to as the blog URL.

the SiteURL is only interesting for you and your employees. There you will find your WordPress dashboard with all plugins, themes, other functions, settings and the location of your files.

That’s why it’s often called the WordPress URL. Normally, the two addresses are similar or identical.

Why should I change my WordPress URL?

As mentioned, your site or WordPress URL is only of interest to you and your employees. Your home URL is more important for your public image. Because it is your address on the web and therefore also the name of your site.

Therefore, the URL should be planned for as long as possibleas your users may not find your website or blog at a new address.

Still, there are reasons to change its URL. Among other things, if you want to move your site or your domain from one hosting provider to another hosting provider or create subdomains.

Or, if you’re lucky enough to accept a financially tempting offer from someone who would like to take advantage of your URL.

Admittedly, the last version is very unlikely. Nevertheless, we will show you how to change the URL of your WordPress website.

Change WordPress URL: how it works!

As is so often the case, WordPress gives you various options for changing the URL of your WordPress website and creating a new address on the web. Here we will introduce you to 3 methods to change your WordPress URL:

  1. In the WordPress dashboard
  2. In the wp-config.php file
  3. About the database

Here we explain in detail how you can change the WordPress URL. Let us begin.

1. In the WordPress dashboard

This variant is definitely the easiest to change the URL of your WordPress website. To do this, simply select “settings” and “General“.

Your current URLs are displayed here and you can easily change them. Enter your new URLs in the two columns, save the changes and your new domain is already entered.

If you have booked an SSL certificate, you must enter the domain with “https”.

2. In your wp-config.php file

You can also register your domain directly in your wp-config.php change file. You don’t even need PHP programming knowledge for this.

You can find the PHP file in the main folder of your WordPress installation. Open the file and then enter the following commands:

define('WP_SITEURL', 'http://www.neue-adresse.de');
define('WP_HOME', 'http://www.neue-adresse.de');

Replace “neue-adresse.de” with your new domain. If you are already using an SSL certificate, you must enter “https” here instead of “http”.

Now save the PHP file and you can access your WordPress website via the new domain.

3. In the database

As a third option, you can also enter your URL directly in the Database change your WordPress website. For this you need access to your phpMyAdmin area.

Often you can also access phpMyAdmin via your hosting provider. If you can’t find it, contact your hosting provider’s support. If you are logged in, look for the table “wp_options“.

Open it and look under “option_name‘ after the site URL. Then select “To edit” and enter in the column “option_value‘ your new URL.

After saving, repeat this process with the home URL. Your new domain is now stored in the database. Complete.

Tip:

Changing your WordPress URL may cause links or shortcuts associated with your site to no longer work properly.

You should therefore delete the cache of your WordPress website in the settings and adjust any links or urls. This includes the permalinks.

To change this, select “settings” and “permalinks‘ and just save it again.

To adjust all other links you need the plugin “Better Search Replace”. It basically works like the “replace” function in Word, Excel and Co.

To do this, after installation, select “tools“ the plugin outputs, enter which character string should be replaced and also specify which text it should be replaced with.

So you can change all links at once and save yourself the manual work. Enter the new domain of your website as the new text.

Our conclusion on WordPress URL change:

You should not change your WordPress address or domain more often than necessary. If you still want to change your WordPress URL, WordPress offers you the options via the dashboard, the wp-config.php file and the database.

Which one you choose is up to you. We hope you enjoy your new domain.
